Letter to property owners within historic districts:

What follows is the text of a letter sent out by the Beloit Landmarks Commission to the owners of properties within these districts. At risk of reinventing wheels while this letter was sent out in 1997 I believe it still to be applicable.

Dear Historic Property Owner:

Congratulations! You own a significant part of Beloit’s history, recognized by the City Council’s designation of your building as an important historic site in the city of Beloit. Our local historic buildings are a source of pride for the entire community. Their care and maintenance is important to the quality of life that all citizens enjoy.

In order to protect your investment and your neighbors’, and to preserve Beloit’s history for future generations, owners must apply to the Beloit Landmarks Commission for a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) before making any exterior changes or improvements to their house. The COA applies to exterior remodeling, additions, new construction, demolition and any other change to the outward appearance of the building. It also applies to any man-made features installed or repaired on the property such as: sheds, garages, fences, sidewalks and driveways. The Certificate of Appropriateness is used to document changes to historic properties that occur over time. No certificate is needed for exterior painting, but owners are encouraged to consult the encluded information for historically appropriate paint schemes and colors, and other information which may help with your project. The Beloit Landmarks Commission meets every two weeks during the construction season for your convenience and monthly during the winter.

This informational packet contains a Historic Preservation Guide Book, a “Resource for Researching House Histories”, Wisconsin Preservation Information on Incentives for Historic Preservation”, a Local Grant and Loan information sheet, and a copy of “The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation“. Additional information is available to explain the benefits for locally designated historic properties by contacting City Hall.

If you have questions, are unsure if a Certificate is needed, or are planning to make any exterior improvements to your house or your property please contact the Landmarks Commission staff person at (608) 364-6700. Commissioners listed below will also gladly assist you. We look forward to meeting you and working with you in the future.

Note:  The current commission does not meet twice monthly during construction season.

If your home is already within one of the registered historic districts you are already eligible to apply for these programs.
