Beloit NPA Committees (draft)

From our last meeting it was resolved to divide up the various ideas proposed to date into a fewer number of broader classifications. This might make it easier for those interested in helping out on something of particular interest to ‘group up’ with others within a committee.

Several of the ideas proposed span more then a single classification or could easily fit into a different grouping. Additionally, some ideas could be spit off into an additional committee either individually or with other items. Open to suggestion. Items are in no particular order.

Proposed:

  1. Neighborhood Action
    1. Work to address animal control issues including unleashed dogs, deer etc.
    2. Work to foster improved conditions for at risk properties within the neighborhood.
    3. Work to address issues over personal safety within the neighborhood.
    4. Work to address challenges in working with the city.
    5. Work to gain a unified voice for advocacy.
    6. Work to address concerns over homes left vacant.
  2. Marketing & PR
    1. Reaching out to real estate investors groups and individuals.
    2. Work to leverage market potential of retired home buyers.
    3. Develop marketing and PR practices and initiatives of various forms and purposes.
    4. Work to develop an awards program recognizing a range of achievements and contributions.
    5. Work to host an historic district / historic house tour as PR & fundraiser.
    6. Develop a form of ‘Welcome Wagon’ program for new residents to the neighborhood.
    7. Promoting & supporting related organizations such as
      1. Downtown merchants assn.
      2. Horace White Park ad-hoc committee
      3. Church Street neighbors group
      4. Beloit historical society
      5. Greater Beloit Area Crime Stoppers
  3. Programs Development
    1. Work to develop a local ‘old house’ trades & services directory.
    2. Inviting civic and subject matter experts to speak, provide workshops and/or demonstrations.
    3. Work to update and expand the outdated self guided walking tour guide for print, audio and/or web. Develop script for guided tours.
    4. Organize ‘work days’ for the benefit of those needing a hand within the neighborhood.
    5. Development of a pooled resource or lending library for specialty tools and equipment.
    6. Coordination of group social gathering or outings such as pot lucks, attending other cities historic district tours etc.
    7. Work to develop grant programs of our own offering incentives to property owners.

There are a lot of items here, too much to try and tackle at once. Participants could decide on priorities, what could be pursued, what gets tabled depending on interest, time and resources. While many hands make for light work, committee participation would not be a prerequisite for membership or attending meetings.

We will touch on this at our next meeting Monday Dec. 8th. 6:30 at Pleasant Street Coffeehouse.
