Yeah, it’s old news. We’ve all seen the ‘vintage’ street lamps that have been going up as streets in the older neighborhoods get new sewer, utilities and general reconstruction. You’ve surely seen them on Harrison, Bluff, Wisconsin and elsewhere. What I wasn’t aware of though was that Church street was likewise upgraded though sans the vintage lamp posts. I understand that Church street was among the first to receive the infrastructure upgrade and reconstruction. This was done though under prior administration.

Glass half-full… I’m glad to see that our current administration has a greater appreciation for the vintage character of our older neighborhoods. The fact that current administration saw value in this where the prior administration did not I see as positive. It affirms the growing sentiment that things continuing to improve within Beloit and the historic districts in particular. I’m glad to see this coming from our city government.
The irony though is that Church Street is arguably the most intact and consistently maintained street of historic homes within Beloit, certainly within the historic districts. I hope we don’t have to wait until Church street gets reconstructed -again- in order to have it brought up to the standard of the neighboring streets subsequently improved.

Beautiful huh? Did this contribute to or diminish our neighborhood and show a disregard for one of the city’s own historic districts?
