Work has begun on yet another downtown Beloit facade. Have you seen it?
It’s exciting to see the ongoing renovation of downtown Beloit. The Zilley building circa 1912 is just the latest in a series.
The Downtown Beloit Association (DBA) offers design assistance, as well as facade and sign grant programs to encourage successful, historically sensitive design. (italics ours)

Debut of Stateline Storytelling – Open Mic Night
Fomenting from some conversations with friends a couple months ago I was reminded of a recurring evening’s entertainment I used to enjoy down in Chicago’s Wrigleyville. Being a fan of storytelling I used to attend an open mic evening of storytelling at a coffeehouse off Clark Street. It was very cool and a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the level of creativity expressed by those who’s artistic and creative output was through this medium.
Anyway. This next Sunday evening we’re debuting open mic storytelling down at bushel & peck’s.
Storytelling begins at 6:30. We begin accepting names of those wishing to tell a story at 6:00. Names will be selected at random.
The evening will be MC’d by our featured guest storyteller Reid Miller who will also complete our evening with a story of his own.
$5 donation and bushel & peck’s patronage appreciated

“Green” rooftops for Beloit’s downtown?

Had a brief conversation with MoeC. He and BillD have been dreaming about expanding the “green” rootop concept to downtown buildings. You’re likely already familiar with the existing green rooftops around town at ABC Supply’s corporate offices, Beloit Memorial Hospital, and more recently at the Colleges Center for the Sciences building.
Evidently there are aspirations for installing one above bushel & peck’s. What a natural fit that would seem to be. Selecting organic produce right off the fine from the roof garden? Sounds kinda’ cool. There’s a lot of unused roof space up there. Catch Moe or Bill. I’m sure they’d love to tell you more about it.

Dave Potter pulled this together as an open Jam and the talent that showed up and performed was AMAZING! If you missed it you missed something really exceptional and special. Don’t miss it again. Have you seen the the Downtown Beloit Association’s “News on the Street” publication? I’d missed it until just days ago. It’s very well done. Very interesting with great content! I was reading the Fall 2008 edition which is still available and what jumped out at me was:

2008 Downtown Beloit Holidazzle… Wow!

Folks that know Ana-n-I know we gravitate to where the LIVE music is happening. And this year’s Holidazzle did not disappoint. Frankly there was more going on then we had time to enjoy and missed some great stuff. There was so much to take in. I love that we can enjoy this level of live entertainment right next door to the historic neighborhood. The shopping, the other special events, the running into friends as we walked from venue to venue was all great fun. I heard it was successful from the downtown merchant’s perspective as well. That too was good to hear.
Among other things we caught Lance Brown’s Group at Cafe’ Belwah. OMG… wow, they were great! We took note of when they’re going to be there again and will be sure to be there. I’ll update it onto our calendar shortly.
Afterwards we headed over to Suds O’Hanahan for The Bel-Cats.
We’ve seen them before, always enjoy them and try to catch them whenever we can. I was pained however to hear we’d missed the Gospel Bells from the Lighthouse Fellowship Church. They were performing just a block over at the Pleasant Street Coffeehouse. Matt Goodwin was sitting in with them as well. Ugh… I heard it was amazing. I’d have really liked to have experienced that. Oh well… next year.
Holidazzle coming up – Friday December 12th
I think our neighborhood in particular benefits from and has a vested interest in having a strong down town. Lets support our downtown merchants this holiday season and mark our calendars for the upcoming Holidazzle event on Friday the 12th from 5:00-9:00 pm. It’s a great time.
